Planning an event in Preston?

Full catering or machine hire?

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but hot, freshly carved roast pork is a different experience.

A DIY hog roast suits a relaxed party where someone enjoys cooking. For bigger or more formal events, catering takes the pressure off.

How our hog roast hire works in Preston

We provide a fully catered hog roast: we roast, our chef carves and our staff serve. If you’d rather do it yourself, we also hire out the machine. For weddings and receptions and community events, we’ll put together a menu of coleslaw, new potatoes and rotisserie chicken for your guests.

In and around Preston, gardens and village halls are common choices. If access is tight, we will plan around it. The hog is roasted on site at your event, low and slow, for hours, and carved only when you’re ready to eat.

How we price a hog roast

We work out each quote from:

  • Site access
  • Distance from us
  • Menu choices and extras
  • Numbers

The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, plus travel and access. Every booking is different, so we quote each one individually.

What we need to know

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. Here’s what to include:

  • Your menu choices
  • Roughly how many people
  • The venue or postcode
  • A photo of the cooking area

Tell us your date, venue or postcode and roughly how many people, plus when you’d like to eat. We’ll check the date and send a quote. Fill in our quote form.

Planners, venues and businesses

Marquee hire companies frequently have rules about cooking near their tents, so tell them a hog roast is coming. The roaster stays a safe distance from the marquee.

Some venues charge a fee if you bring in your own caterer, so it is worth asking first. We will liaise with them on access and set-up.

Planning for dietary needs

Some guests will not eat pork, so plan an alternative. A few pointers:

  • Remember that stuffing normally contains gluten, so ask for the allergen list
  • Label the vegetarian and vegan food clearly
  • Tell us about vegetarians and vegans so we bring enough halloumi skewers and vegan burgers or sausages
  • Add a dietary question to your invitations

We will agree a contact for the day, ideally not the host, so you can enjoy yourself.

Ask for gluten-free rolls for anyone who needs them.

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Our vegetarian option is halloumi and vegetable skewers: grilled halloumi with vegetables, in a roll or on a plate.

Crackling

Crackling takes hours to get right, which is exactly what a slow hog roast gives it.

  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster
  • A level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • Access for our equipment, without steps

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a photo and we will tell you honestly.

The process

Here’s how the day generally runs: we arrive, set up under cover and start roasting, the roast cooks gently through the day, and we carve and serve at the agreed time. In Preston, the sun sets at about 9:20pm in late June and about 7:05pm in late September, so a summer evening hog roast is normally carved in daylight. In December it is dark by about 3:55pm, so the cooking and serving area needs lighting.

  1. First, you send us your date, address, numbers and serving time.
  2. We check availability and the space for the roaster and send a clear quote.
  3. We arrive well ahead, put the cover up and get the hog roasting.
  4. Our chef carves to order and our staff serve at the agreed time.
  5. Afterwards we clear up and leave the spot tidy.

Getting ready for the day

  • Choose someone to meet us on arrival
  • Let us know about tight access
  • Ensure we can wheel the roaster to the spot
