Is a hog roast right for your event?

Next to a buffet, a hog roast is hot, freshly carved and feels like an occasion. A buffet can sit out all afternoon. Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. Slow roasting means we’re on site for much of the day, and the quote reflects that.

Why Kemptown hosts choose us

  • Staff to serve, so you do not have to
  • Planned to your running order
  • Salads, potatoes and coleslaw to go with it
  • Rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling

Read our prices page or the cost guide.

How we price a hog roast

We work out each quote from:

  • How easy it is to reach the spot
  • Menu choices and extras
  • Season and day of the week
  • How many people are eating

Distance is part of the price: we include travel in the quote, with any London charges listed. Give us the address for an accurate figure.

What we need to know

Here’s what we will ask:

  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • Which meats and sides you’d like
  • Allergies we should know about
  • Rough numbers

Tell us your date, venue or postcode and roughly how many people, plus when you’d like to eat. We’ll confirm availability and send a price. Fill in our quote form.

Diets, allergies and alternatives

Tell us about dietary needs early and we’ll help. Some ideas:

  • Put the menu on the invitation
  • Collect allergies with your RSVPs
  • Request gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Count anyone who doesn’t eat pork, so we can bring lamb, chicken or vegetarian options

We’ll agree a contact for the day, ideally not the host, so you can enjoy yourself.

We also hire out the roaster for DIY hog roasts.

The menu, dish by dish

Stuffing and apple sauce

No hog roast roll is complete without sage and onion stuffing and apple sauce, balancing the rich, salty pork.

Spit-roast lamb

Spit-roast lamb cooks slowly like the hog, and it is carved the same way, often with mint sauce.

Common questions in Kemptown

Could you cook in Queen's Park?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, usually the council, and many parks don’t allow cooking. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

We’re gathering after a service at St George's Church: can you cater?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is generally elsewhere. Tell us where you will gather.

Can we have lamb or chicken?

The hog is the centrepiece, but lamb and chicken can be added.

Will people get crackling?

Yes, the crackling is shared out as we carve.

What if it rains?

Rain does not stop the cooking. A marquee, hall or barn for eating makes all the difference.

What comes with the hog roast?

Rolls with roast pork, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. You can add lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options, salads, coleslaw and potatoes.

Is hog roast hire catered or DIY?

You can have us cook, or hire the machine. Your quote will set out what’s included.

How big a hog will we need?

We plan quantities from the numbers you give us, and we will confirm everything in writing.

Space, access and the venue

A hog roast cooks outdoors for hours, so the spot matters, so a few things are worth checking:

  • Permission from the venue or landowner
  • A sheltered place for people to eat if it rains
  • Space away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches

If you are unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think.

The process

Service is quick once we start carving: our chef carves and our staff fill the rolls or plates, and sides go out at the same time. When everyone has eaten, we clear up and leave the spot tidy. Late September evenings in Kemptown lose the light at about 7:05pm, and in December it’s nearer 3:55pm. For anything after that, plan lights for the serving area.

  1. You tell us the date, the address, rough numbers and when you’d like to eat.
  2. You get a check on the date and the spot, and a quote.
  3. We arrive well ahead, put the cover up and get the hog roasting.
  4. At serving time, the chef carves and the team serves.
  5. We clear the serving area and pack away.

Preparing for the day

  • Tell us about narrow gates or side passages
  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • Have a level outdoor spot ready
