How our hog roast hire works in Heathfield

Booking a hog roast means you do not have to cook. We arrive hours before you eat, set up under cover and roast slowly, then carve and serve at the time you choose. On the menu are salads, halloumi skewers and hog roast rolls, and we’re regularly asked to cater birthdays and anniversaries and weddings, day or evening.

In and around Heathfield, gardens and village halls are common choices. If access is tight, we will plan around it. Your quote spells out what’s included: serving times, the menu, staff and anything else agreed, with no surprises on the day.

Roasting pork on a rotisserie spit, skin scored and golden

What comes off the roaster

Rotisserie chicken

Chicken from the rotisserie gives people a non-pork choice, roasted until golden.

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

Our vegan option is a vegan burger or sausage, served in a roll with salads.

Planning the cooking spot

The cooking area is the main thing to plan. A quick checklist:

  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster
  • A level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • Space away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches

If you’re unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think before booking.

Catered or do it yourself?

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

For planners, venues and organisers

If you are booking for a workplace, ask your facilities team about outside caterers and gas cooking. We will fit in with site rules.

For events on land you do not own, such as a park or field, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

Heathfield questions

Is Heathfield close to London?

About 66 miles from central London, and well within our area.

What’s the nearest station to Heathfield?

The closest is Fareham station, roughly 0.9 miles away.

When do you start roasting?

A whole hog roasts for several hours, which is why we arrive hours ahead. We plan the timings from when you want to eat.

Is crackling included?

It is: the skin turns to crackling and everyone gets some.

How far ahead should we book?

As early as you can for summer weekends and December. Quieter dates can often be booked at shorter notice. Ask and we’ll check.

Is all of Hampshire covered?

Hampshire is part of our area, including Heathfield. Contact us for a price.

What happens after service?

Our staff clear the serving area, so you’re not left with the mess.

Do you need power or water?

No, the roast is cooked on gas. Let us know what’s on site.

How we price a hog roast

Every booking is priced individually, and the price depends on a few things:

  • The journey to the venue
  • Season and day of the week
  • How long the roast and service take
  • Numbers

UK price guides vary widely: roughly £10 a head for a simple roll, rising past £20 with more included. We quote every event individually, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

Getting an accurate quote

To check the date and the space, we’ll need:

  • Allergies we should know about
  • Roughly how many people
  • Where the event is
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a picture

It is easy to get a price: tell us when, where, how many and what time you’d like to eat. You’ll get a clear quote listing what’s included. Fill in our quote form.

The process

Service is quick once we start carving: our chef carves and our staff fill the rolls or plates, and sides go out at the same time. When everyone has eaten, we clear up and leave the spot tidy. Around midsummer it stays light in Heathfield until about 9:20pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:10pm, so a summer evening hog roast is normally carved in daylight. For winter events, dark by about 4:00pm, we need light by the roaster and the serving table.

  1. You tell us the date, the address, rough numbers and when you’d like to eat.
  2. We check the date and the cooking area, then send a quote.
  3. On the day, we set up on the agreed spot and start roasting.
  4. We carve and serve when you’re ready to eat.
  5. Afterwards we clear up and leave the spot tidy.

Getting ready for the day

  • Give us final numbers a week or so before
  • Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking
  • Collect dietary needs and allergies in advance
