The process

On the day, we position the roaster under cover and get the hog cooking. It then roasts slowly for several hours, timed so it’s ready when you want to eat. Evenings in Shoreham-by-Sea stay light until about 9:20pm in June, but by late September sunset is around 7:05pm; once it is dark, we need light at the carving station.

  1. First, you send us your date, address, numbers and serving time.
  2. We check availability and the space for the roaster and send a clear quote.
  3. On the day we arrive hours before serving and start the roast under cover.
  4. At serving time, the chef carves and the team serves.
  5. Afterwards we clear up and leave the spot tidy.

Before we arrive

  • Have a level outdoor spot ready
  • Ask about allergies and dietary needs beforehand
  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage

A hog roast compared with other options

Next to a barbecue, a hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone, so nobody stands at a grill all afternoon. Our guide compares the two. Weekday and off-season dates can be easier to book, and the menu you choose makes a difference too. Ask us and we will suggest the best fit for your budget.

Why book with us

  • Self-contained: roaster, cover and serving kit
  • Salads, potatoes and coleslaw to go with it
  • Fresh carving at the serving station
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside

What we serve, dish by dish

Rotisserie chicken is there for anyone who’d rather not have pork, and children typically like it too.

A few things make the biggest difference to the price:

  • Time on site
  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. Slow roasting means we’re on site for much of the day, which is built into the price.

Planning the cooking spot

We need room to cook safely and under cover. Before booking, check:

  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster
  • A level, open spot outdoors for the roaster

Allergies and dietary needs

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. A few tips:

  • Remember that stuffing typically contains gluten, so check the allergen information
  • If anyone needs halal food, plan a separate option
  • Count anyone who does not eat pork, so we can bring lamb, chicken or vegetarian options
  • Tell us about vegetarians and vegans so we bring enough halloumi skewers and vegan burgers or sausages

On the day, you shouldn’t have to think about the food. We arrive hours ahead, set up, roast, carve and serve, then clear up.

Prefer to cook yourself? Ask about DIY machine hire.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

Catered or DIY? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a whole hog takes hours, and it needs to be cooked through safely. If that sounds stressful, choose the catered option.

  • Roasted slowly at your venue, outdoors and under cover
  • Carved to order by our chef, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Options beyond pork, including lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes
  • Served by our staff at the time you choose, then cleared away
