Allergies and dietary needs

A hog roast is pork, so plan for anyone who doesn’t eat it. Here’s how to cover everyone:

  • If anyone needs halal food, plan a separate option
  • Put the menu on the invitation
  • Ask us to keep the vegetarian food separate and labelled
  • Remember that stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen information

Expect us to be on site for much of the day, because the roast starts hours before you eat.

A second roast, lamb or chicken, gives people a choice.

About our hog roast hire in New Hinksey

Hog roast hire takes the cooking off your hands. We get there early, put up the cover and roast for hours, ready to carve when you are. We serve rotisserie chicken, halloumi skewers and new potatoes, and we’re regularly asked to cater sports clubs and societies and wakes and memorial gatherings.

A place like New Hinksey frequently has a village hall, a recreation ground or a pub garden nearby; any can work, with the owner’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster. Our chef carves in front of your guests, so the pork is hot and the crackling is crisp, and nothing sits in a hot cabinet.

The process

It is a relaxed, well-organised set-up. We agree arrival and serving times in advance, set up where we have agreed, and get on with roasting and serving. Late September evenings in New Hinksey lose the light at about 7:10pm, and in December it is nearer 3:55pm. For anything after that, plan lights for the serving area.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We look at the cooking area and send a price.
  3. We arrive early, set up under cover and start roasting.
  4. Our chef carves and our staff serve.
  5. We pack away and leave you to it.

Preparing for the day

  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment
  • Check there’s nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
  • Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking

Full catering or machine hire?

Full catering or machine hire? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

You could roast a hog yourself, but it is a long day’s work, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Next to a formal plated meal, a hog roast doesn’t need a kitchen, which normally keeps the cost down. For larger numbers, a hog roast is generally good value, because one whole roast feeds a lot of people. The menu, extras such as china and the serving time all affect the final price.

What you get with us

Questions from New Hinksey

Is New Hinksey close to London?

About 52 miles from central London.

Could you cook in South Park?

Only if the landowner, generally the council, allows it. Check with them first.

Do you leave the area tidy?

We clear the serving area and pack away, and leave the area tidy.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

The menu has lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options. We do not provide halal meat.

Is it just pork?

The hog is the centrepiece, but lamb and chicken can be added.

Do you serve the food?

We carve and serve for you, then clear the serving area afterwards.

Do you cook it or do we?

Both are available: we can cater fully or hire out the machine. Catering is the most popular choice.

Can the hog roast be cooked indoors?

No, the roast is always cooked outdoors under cover, away from buildings and marquee walls. We can frequently serve indoors if the venue agrees.

For planners, venues and organisers

For events on land you do not own, such as a park or field, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so it’s worth asking first. We will liaise with them on access and set-up.
