Why evening food matters
By the evening, guests have had a long day, a few drinks and plenty of dancing. Hot, simple food keeps the party going and looks after evening-only guests who missed the meal.
Hog roast rolls
A roll of roast pork with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling is a classic for good reason: it’s hot, filling and easy to eat standing up. Add halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan burger or sausage for guests who don’t eat pork, and chicken if you like.
Timing
Evening food usually goes out an hour or two after the first dance. Too early and guests aren’t hungry; too late and some have left. With a hog roast, the roast cooks through the afternoon and is held until carving, so ask your venue coordinator to tell the caterer when to start.
How much to cater for
Not every evening guest eats, especially if they’ve had a full wedding breakfast. Ask your caterer how many to plan for, and count children and non-pork eaters separately.
Serving late at night
Plan lighting at the serving table and a clear route from the dance floor. In winter, it’s dark by late afternoon, so lights matter even more.
Other ideas
- A cheese table, if the venue allows it alongside outside catering
- Bacon or sausage rolls, often provided by the venue
- Pizza or street-food vans
Whatever you choose, keep it simple and hot.
Serving from a station
Evening food usually works best from a serving station rather than at tables: guests drift over when they’re ready, and the dancing carries on. A hog roast roll station, with a chef carving and staff filling rolls, keeps things moving.
Late-night extras
Some couples add something sweet later in the evening, such as the wedding cake cut into slices. Keep the evening simple: one hot option and a sweet treat is plenty for most weddings.
Tell your guests
Put a note on the evening invitation that food will be served, and roughly when. Evening guests then know not to eat beforehand, and you get a better idea of numbers.
Dietary needs in the evening
Evening guests often don’t get asked about dietary needs. Add a question to the evening invitation, and make sure there’s a vegetarian and vegan option alongside the pork.
Lighting the serving station
After dark, the serving station needs to be well lit, with a clear path from the dance floor. Festoon lights look lovely and help guests see what they’re eating.
Evening food at a winter wedding
At winter weddings, it’s dark well before the evening reception. Hot food matters even more, and the route to the serving station needs lighting.
Quick answers
Is a hog roast good evening food?
Yes. It’s hot, generous and quick to serve once carving starts.
Should evening food be the same as the wedding breakfast?
Not necessarily. Many couples have a formal meal and a hog roast in the evening.
